Bitternut (or yellow-bud) hickory is a slender tree of mesic forests, particularly on rich loam soil. It does well in shade, but grows faster if it receives at least some direct sunlight each day. It has beautiful, finely ridged, gray bark, and bright sulfur-yellow buds, but the nuts are too bitter to eat.
